The list used to be twice as long as this in the 19th century. Its called
British Imperialism (or to use 20th century politically correct speach, the
British Commonwealth). We inherited the idea from our Roman ancestors. You
should see their list! Seems that around this time of year one of the
countries involved in that set gets a lot of publicity due to the failure of
the imperialists to control one of their local appointees, who took it in
his head to murder all young babies in the country. Fortunately at least one
baby born in that period survived to adulthood, before being crucified by
the imperialists.

PS The only reason UK retain contol of the British Indian Ocean Territories
is so that the US Air Force can have a base to monitor the Gulf from :-)
