I personally feel, web services have made possible one thing:
Getting the vendors (by this I mean the BIG ones) to think 
in one unified way, at least on the agreement of using XML, SOAP, 
(UDDI/WSDL)/ebXML. That itself is a significant achievement!

From the stories I've been reading in the industry press, I get the
impression that the reporters for these magazines are getting tired of
being told "X is the next big thing", duly reporting about how
important and wonderful X is, and then seeing X fade into oblivion.  I
suspect the reporters feel as if they've been "burned" and are getting
more skeptical about "emerging industry trends".  I can see why they
could reasonably have this kind of attitude about the buzzphrase "web
services".
