Subject: Gartner Research?

In reading this today am I the only one in shock and awe?

Since when was XML use been a pre-qualifier for webservices?!?

Since when has a 3 percent response on WSDL qualified as
"entering the mainstream?".

The expression I'm reminded of is "taking a few grains of sand
and building a beach".

And were these the only questions asked? Seems they were
a totally limited list that missed the mark on many key aspects
that would truely show a real trend.

Of course as a trained physicist - the statistical distortion of trends
by improper analysis techniques is something that is engrained
when compiling physical experiments. The business world
it would seem marches to a different step.

How about some basic questions such as:

1) Does your organization view webservice technologies as
appropriate and ready for deployment within your IT
     infrastructure? Yes/No

2) What adoption path are you taking on webservices?
This year / Next Year / Not for Two Years / Longer / Never

3) How mature do you see webservice standards?

     Very mature / Mature / Somewhat mature / Immature / Unknown / Don't
care

4) Are you happy with your current IT infrastructure and do not foresee
change in next year?

Happy / No changes planned / Changes needed but no plans / Changes
planned

5) Is accredited interoperability and independently validated functionality
important
in selecting software solutions for your organization?

Critical / Significant / Desirable / Marginal / Not an issue

If we are really trying to find out what is happening in the bushes why not
ask
direct and relevant questions - instead of dancing around the tough
questions
and trying to cast a distorted view based on reflecting an agenda that
respondents
do not share?

The probability of this not meaning anything real at all anytime soon is
0.8 +/- 0.3

Gartner Surveys Show Web Services Are Entering the Mainstream
Michele Cantara, Whit Andrews, and Nicole Latimer; Gartner FirstTake

The 2003-04-24 Gartner Dataquest surveys show that Web services have
entered the mainstream but also that users' understanding of Web
services remains unsophisticated. The respondents claim, for example,
that 92 percent of their system integration projects -- and those
projected through February 2004 -- involve Web services. The survey
data also shows that 86 percent of enterprises use Extensible
Markup Language (XML); however, enterprises report much lower usage
rates for other Web services standards.
