Subject: Re: [Vienna Docs] - update 1: Duns and IP numbers
Chris Ferris asked "why are we using fictitious DUNS+4 numbers as opposed to real ones?" Great question - I think it looks dorky to manufacture D-U-N-S numbers when the real ones are guaranteed to be unique worldwide - and are only nine digits long! For your consideration, I've attached an updated copy of the DUNS_IP_vienna.xls spreadsheet with the real D-U-N-S of each of the POC participants. Included are the locations of the companies, as a sanity check to ensure the correct D-U-N-S is listed. Lycos' Companies Online at http://www.companiesonline.com/ was sufficient for obtaining most, though a few were obtained from the D&B research desk at 800.333.0505 where a real friendly fellow was able to come up with the few stragglers in just a couple moments - the only tough one was Infoteria Corporation, and he found the D-U-N-S of the presumed parent in Japan. The *nine* digit D-U-N-S is listed in the PartyID column with dash separators - these would not be included in the party identifier in the registry (oh! am I making assumptions? or is this stuff all hard-coded?) or the MS message header, as they are only for viewability. Some of the larger companies have multiple divisions, and I just picked the most plausible candidate or the parent entity's D-U-N-S. Normally, participants should be expected to know their own D-U-N-S. And in this case, everyone did happen to have a D-U-N-S, but in the real world you will have to make provision for alternate identifier systems, such as the EAN GLN. William J.
