Hmmm, I have never heard of BEEP.  Is that a stand-in for another
four-letter word?  :-)

Dale,

I am not disputing that there are circumstances
that may warrant a synchronous exchange (blocking
on a half-duplex communication protocol).

What I was arguing is that synchronous != speed.

Certainly, when a client is either incapable of,
or unwilling to listen on a socket for connections,
it does tend to preclude asynchronous exchanges
where the sender of a response has to initiate the
connection. However, this only serves as a reason
why there is growing interest in protocols such as
BEEP.

HTTP simply wasn't designed for messaging;-)
