Subject: RE: [ebxml-dev] OMG/OASIS/HRXML etc. Interop Conference OrlandoJun27+28

Duane,

I was there at the meeting too. I agree with some of the statements
you make below, in particular regarding "not invented here" syndrome.

However, I came back with an impression that the people working
on the various standards (there was some overlapping, but not a whole lot)
did not make the effort to learn about the other standards. This meeting
possibly was the first effort at promoting it. Everything said, I thought
the meeting did a decent job of starting from a somewhat "neutral" ground,
and at least facilitate listening to various sides. I consider even that an
achievement.
It will be too much to expect the miracle of one framework in one meeting.

Given some more meetings and some more time, I am hopeful people will
really put their own opinions into actionable items (e.g. use what is not
invented here:-) The case is worsened when the creators of a standard
framework think it will apply to a different problem than it was originally
intended for.
I remember some presentations that fit this category at the summit.
One glove does not fit all - and even when it is shrunk:-)

Announcement of an MoU with OASIS,
http://www.oasis-open.org/news/oasis_news_02_11_02.shtml
is a good positive outcome.

I am not making it to Orlando this time, but would be eager to hear
what transpires and what progress is made.

Regards,

Mike:

I was there at the Dec conference as were Karl Best and others from
OASIS and UN/CEFACT. ebXML was well represented however, I was
personally quite dismayed at the treatment ebXML got. Whe the goals of
"interoperability" were discussed during the open plenary, I personally
stated that ebXML had the same set of drivers and suggested that rather
than start off again, they shoudl throw their weight behind ebXML.
Rather than agree to this, they started to re-invent and re-discover a
lot fo ground ebXML has already covered.

The main irony arose from their identification of "Not invented here" as
a major barrier to overcome for interoperability.

I think that via the good folks at OASIS, ebXML will be well
represented. I openly encourage the group to toss their effort behind
ebXML rather than re-inventing what we have already done.

I would like to hear an official comment on stature from the organizaers
of this group as to why they don;t want to wokr with ebXML. ebXML is
the infrastructure that can allow interoperability between disparate
standards.
