A minor correction "well-formedness" is verified without reference to a DTD or schema.  In broad
terms, it means that you have matching end tags for each element's start tag, that the nesting
levels are correct (for more info, see 2.1 of XML 1.0 (second edition) Oct 6, 2000 at W3C).
"Validation" is term generally used to indicate that an instance document conforms to the definition
expressed in a DTD or schema.
