Subject: RE: [ebxml-dev] ebXML DTDs and Schemas for Purchase Orders,Invoi ces etc.
I agree with David's observation that vertical industries are leading the charge in developing their own "standard transactions". For example, the Travel Industry has created their own Transaction Schema's (ref: http://www.opentravel.org/opentravel/2001c.cfm). The energy industry has created their own Schema's: - U.S. Electric (http://www.uig.org/) click on Groups/XML Workgroup - Canadian Electric (http://www.oeb.gov.on.ca/english/codes_rules.htm) look for Authorized Electronic Business Transaction Standards and click on Schemas or Implementation Guides for XML transaction set information - Natural Gas (http://www.gisb.org/xml.htm) I believe this is also the case in other industries (financial, banking (NACHA http://internetcouncil.nacha.org/Projects/B2Bproject/b2bproject.htm), etc.) Dick Brooks Systrends, Inc 7855 South River Parkway, Suite 111 Tempe, Arizona 85284 Web: www.systrends.com <http://www.systrends.com> Phone:480.756.6777,Mobile:205-790-1542,eFax:240-352-0714 -----Original Message----- From: Welsh, David [mailto:David.Welsh@nordstrom.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 10:56 AM To: Norris, Ray Cc: 'ebXML-dev@lists.ebxml.org'; 'mike@rawlinsecconsulting.com' Subject: RE: [ebxml-dev] ebXML DTDs and Schemas for Purchase Orders, Invoi ces etc. Ray, Further, and it sort of depends on what vertical industry you are focusing in on for work in progress but for example foreward thinking folks in the AIAG for the automotive industry, great folks like the UCC and the GCI in the Retail industry are but of a few of the growing number of vertical industries who are probably the best (dealing with their actual business communities - those of us who do business, large companies and small) where 'business schemas' will come from. A few points I'd like to further mention with respect to ebXML: 1. if memory serves me, UN/CEFACT and OASIS have jointly agreed that the business 'CONTENT' belongs on the UN/CEFACT side of the relationship and UN/CEFACT (plus of course not forgetting X12 !) have established relationships with the various vertical business communities. Again I believe it was always the ebXML vision that ebXML would create the 'HOW TO ...' while vertical industries serving their memberships and who know their own vertical industry would do a great job creating the 'WHAT IT IS ...' such as 'schemas' thru a globally coordinated effort hosted by UN/CEFACT. 2. in EDI the *focus* was on an EDI document (format) centric approach to exchanging business information. IN ebXML, THE *FOCUS* HAS MOVED FURTHER THAN EDI !! In ebXML it is about 'Business Processes' and Business Modeling and ' a lot of formal technology specifications (on things like XML messaging, things like the structure of a Registry, on things like forming a technical trading partner profile). I think you'll find you'll want more than a schema, and get into business process modeling, if you want to 'do ebXML'. 3. ebXML was an 18 month time limited project that acted with intent 'to start the (XML for business) ball rolling', building in part on a foundation from the EDI community experience and also current software industry new work (XML, ..). Personally I think the very best of the ebXML spirit, and perhaps what you look for, has yet to come but only time will tell.
